at least that's what it feels like. full on speed-whapped by life's adventure.
i've finally concluded that this is not my year. way too much going on, not enough rest. mentally, i feel much better than i did at this point last year, but the body just doesn't have the high top end that is needed in a 3 hr time trial. which brings us to the o2s race report.
after taking 3-ish days to recover from a 'reunion drinking session' last year on my leadville week, i skipped this years' 're-reunion pool party' on friday in hopes of retaining some sort of stabilty for the race. ha, like that was going to do any good. my legs were feeling fatigued on my warmup down the first section of the course before the dusty and dirty started. which after the start, is exactly where i sat up and kicked it down to the 100 mile pace. if i didn't, the legs wouldn't have carried the day for sure.
i forgot how much of a rush it is to bomb the downhills on this course and the ledges in the rocky 'powerline' section were fun to wheelie drop down at speed, seeing as i wasn't all spaced out 'racing'. definitely had me thinking about riding in utah again.
chatted with a few people i knew along the way and had a nice fast cruise, getting some help here and there with some paceline action. i wasn't going so hard on the easy stuff that i was blowing myself out when i needed to climb, so it was easy to have some fun and put the hurt on a few unsuspecting souls who blew themselves up trying to maintain pace. probably bad karma for sure, but i'll take my knocks for a little bit of pleasure. i'll chalk it up as 'schooling the schooled'.
after a little hike up 'boyscout hill' (shredded wood-o-rama) it was pretty much an all out sprint for the finish as i could feel the heat coming up from behind. i layed down the gas and kept some roadie from wisconsin from beating me to the line. yay! a sprint finish at the end! couldn't quite catch the guy in front of me. ahh, it was fun and i wasn't all cramped up and puking at the end. good, fun race!
a quick hitch from the tour bus, car back for shower/bike/fam hookup and it was all pub-crawl-window-shop-downtown-grub-a-thon until it was way to late too hit the awards. how can it be that a place named flanigans doesn't have an i.v. to the guinness factory? tsk. tsk. i had a blue moon. well, flat and windy as does belgium and michigan. must be an omen.
lights out at midnight and i had my 2nd 8hr sleep night in a row. now if i can only maintain the pace. ;)
